Configuring Client Email

The best part about email is being able to check it anywhere at any time as long as you have an internet connection.  Orcas Web’s webmail system can be accessed via any browser through our email hosting site, orcasonline.com/webmail.  We do understand that webmail also isn’t always enough; storing emails on your phone, iPad, or other mobile device or computer provides private and very convenient opportunities to adjust your folders, address book, and other mail client settings.  As such we are happy to provide our customers with the ability to configure an email client for their Orcas Web email.

CONFIGURING CLIENT EMAIL

The process of setting up a mail client is referred to as configuration.  This involves telling your mail client all about your email account, specifically its address, internet ports, and security settings.  Bear in mind that webmail clients usually do not require configuration if they are the default client that your email host utilizes.  For the most part, you will only need to configure email clients that are installed on your computer; or email client apps that your mobile devices use.

How can I go about configuring my email?

Each mobile device or mail client may have a slightly different tool or settings options for manually configuring email; your mail client developers or mobile device producers should have instructions on how to access and manipulate these configuration settings.  Some of the popular clients like Microsoft Outlook, Windows Live Mail, and Mail are typical examples of an email client and how it can be set up and manipulated on your device.  Make sure to tell your client that you want to manually configure email settings if it gives you the option to.  Otherwise, it will automatically request configuration settings from you.

What are my configuration settings?

Orcas Web’s data for manual configuration is split between SSL/TLS and non-SSL settings, with SSL referring to a secured connection.  Orcas Web highly recommends always using SSL/TLS settings for all of your email clients.  You will also be prompted to choose IMAP or POP3 settings.  The primary difference between those settings is that POP3 stores your emails on your device instead of the mail server, so it is recommended that you use IMAP when checking email on multiple devices.

The username for your email is always your email address; some clients will allow you to shorten your username to the local-part of the email address (i.e. example in example@domain.com).  The password for your configuration settings is the same as your email login password.  For SSL/TLS settings your incoming server will be orcasonline.com and it will use Port 993 for IMAP and Port 995 for POP3.  Your outgoing server will also be orcasonline.com and will use SMTP Port 465.

Non-SSL settings use the same information for your username and password as SSL settings would.  However, your incoming and outgoing servers will both be mail.orcasonline.com.  The incoming server will use Port 143 for IMAP and Port 110 for POP3.  The outgoing server uses SMTP Port 587.  There is no limitation or penalty on using non-SSL settings, but we highly recommend always using SSL/TLS settings for any mail client configuration.

Is there anything else I need to know?

The support staff at Orcas Web is always happy to answer any questions you may have and we will gladly assist you in the configuration process.  We can also email configuration settings to you or a contact you designate.  Also please remember that your emails are stored safely on our email servers throughout the client setup, so any mistakes made in the configuration process can be corrected without any loss of data on your part.
